Buy Doxa, or AP Royal Oak, Blancpain, IWC, Omega… stuck with a mint 2005 Rolex Submariner that gives me a rash within hours, Rolex has never responded, and I’ve owed vintage Rolex and never had a rash problem.

That’s my Justification for buying such a Beautiful Timepiece!

Basically the article states that they are one third more water resistant that stated/advertised.

It is absolutely incredible and is running -1 second over 4 days. I bought my watch new from a seller named DavidSW and saved a ton of money with the Rolex warrantee.I thought about buying a new sub but I am not a diver and the watch is so easily recognizable I wanted something a little more understated. The Explorer though. Water resistant to almost 400 ft is more of a land watch with that orange arrow on the dial able to track time in another time zone. Next up is the Explorer 1.

I am going to pick one up myself this year. I am not a fan of the yacht master. That is says Yacht Master in big letters makes it seem a little too blingy and a little less classic line inspired rolex that I love. Steel Daytona silver/white face is an excellent and beautiful watch, but a totally different price point. If money is no object, get the one you like better aesthetically.

^ False.

Many brands of watches that make Submariner homages also have a cyclops: Squale, Parnis, Tiger Concepts are a few off the top of my head. They vary in effectiveness from mostly useless to as good as Rolex.

The BETTER idea is to manufacture the crystal with the date magnifier on the INSIDE of the crystal. I had an Omega Seamaster Cosmic from the 70s that had this, and it was wonderful. Not quite as effective as Rolex’s, but totally unobtrusive too.

I wear continuously except to shower. The store has returned to Rolex for service 3 tines but after a month it goes back to running slow. I have endured countless lecture on the way to wind which I have always followed religiously. Rolex has the watch again for one week and say it is -1/day so it is fine. I know I will get it back again and in 1 month it will start running behind. The store is not helping at all. I would like to get a new one since it has run slow since I bought it less than a year ago. Is this normal and is it reasonable to want it replaced?

Prior I assumed it was a much less desirable Rolex model. In 1994 I purchased an 18kt PRESIDENTIAL OYSTERQUARTZ with platinum diamond bezel & birchwood dial. I’m second owner and it was purchased new in 1987. If not in mint condition, it’s the closest thing to it. 99% of it’s life was spent either in a safe deposit box or safe. Can you please estimate a value? Manny thanks

Comment on Rolex Bracelet Clasps – Always a debate by Silvan David https://beckertime.com/blog/rolex-bracelet-clasps-always-a-debate/#comment-51216 Mon, 25 Aug 2014 15:41:25 +0000 http://beckertime.com/?p=384#comment-51216 I also very much dislike the new clasp. It is sad that rolex is forced to move into this direction of producing more flashy watches because their main customers are from the east, Russia, China, Japan. I did own the new submariner for 1 day, then returned it and bought myself a “vintage” 2008 edition of the same with the less flashy clasp and face.

The watch collector forums and ebay are great places to find the value of your goodies. They definitely have value. On ebay, you can see what comparables are listed at and have sold for. On the forums, such as http://timekeeperforum.com, you can network with collectors.

I have quite a few Rolex golf accessories given to our family at various country club events. I couldn’t find much on the internet about them. We have leather golf bag tags, ball markers, divot tools, golf balls, golf tees, and various other items. All with original boxes and bags. Any value there?
Thanks!

Amazing piece lots of wrist presence. I am very impressed with the brand. I wish it had AR coating but I heard Rolex doesn’t add AR coating to their watches.

Highly recommended, probably the best watch I have ever owned.

The side of the steel case (On the 9/oc side) appears to have a bad metal porous area, i have had the watch lightly polished just to make sure it was not just a deep dent or scratch, but the jeweller agree’s that we think it is bad metal. Is this unusual, and will rolex do anything about replacing it do you think?

I saw this post and thought you’d be a great person to answer a question for me. I’m very seriously considering buying a pre-owned ladies 18k gold president, the bracelet is fairly loose, leading me to assume it was likely worn loosely by the previous owner. Will this threaten the durability of the bracelet? Simply, is it more likely to somehow break? Also, I do realize it will affect the resale value somewhat…will it effect it a lot? Thanks so much for your time and answer!

Now the first time serviced. Perfect except bezel would not turn. Second time I sent it threw a dealer. When I received it back . It was losing time. I had the watch returned , came back fine. Running to this day. I have sense found out the jeweler I have been using is no reputable . I have herd horror story’s of Rolexs being sent out to service. They take the quality parts. Replacing with a cheaper par. Now my watch runs great and always has. But can anyone tell me where I could get my watched looked at. To make sure all the right pars. I have been paying around $500 for servicing. Is that about the market? Thanks Steve

I think that is very respectable for such an elderly time piece. I leave it lying on its bracelet with dial up each night. As it’s on the bracelet, it doesn’t lie perfectly flat so possibly if I correct this, it might lose a bit less time. In any event, its very decent performance for a 57 year old mechanical device that is subject to constantly varying motion during the day. Bravo Rolex!

Comment on SWATCH Sistem51 – WOMW Review by Markus Lessky https://beckertime.com/blog/swatch-sistem51-womw-review/#comment-10333 Fri, 31 Jan 2014 08:38:40 +0000 http://beckertime.com/?p=65861#comment-10333 Hi Dave,

thanks for your answer. Your review was really interesting and helpful.
I think a part of the noise problem is, that the rotor is winding only in one direction – this direction is not loud but the other one when it turns around for one, two or even three seconds without winding.

I wrote to swatch customer service too and they also said, it´s a problem of sound insulation because of the plastic case.
I can´t go to a shop because I life in Austria about 600km from the nearest swatch shop in Switzerland :-(
But I think I will keep it that way till sistem51 is in shops in Austria and then compare to other watches there.

Best regards

Markus

Thanks for commenting, and the question.
My watch is very noisy, and in the same instance as you, i.e. in a silent room, the watch is still quite noisy at that distance in such an environment. As long as the watch is keeping good time, and the seconds hand still smooth, you should be fine.
Part of the sound is all because of the lack of sound insulation from the thin plastic case, so it will always be relatively noisy.

If you are still concerned I recommend you take the watch back to a SWATCH boutique in Switzerland and ask them about it.

Good luck.

Many thanks,

Dave
ps thank you for reading, I hope you found it helpful.

You warned, the watch would be very noisy and the rotor can be heard a foot away.
The rotor of my sistem51 can be heard from about 2-3m away in a quiet room, especially when turning counterclockwise and it sound like turning the crown clockwise.
I am rather worried about the sound – is it the same with yours?

Best regards from Austria

The price difference between 316L and 304L is negligible. Both cost considerably less than $5 per kilo – enough to make five submariners.

If Rolex was genuinely serious about corrosion resistance rather than (cheap marketing gimmicks) it would be using titanium or ceramic for it’s cases rather stainless steel.

Ive had a Rolex stolen from me 3 years ago, which I was consistently looking out for; online, for sale at used shops, on the arms of passing people. One late night I work up around 3 am, which i couldn’t sleep for some reason (about 6 months ago) and decided to look at random stuff people where selling these days, which I wandered to the jewelry and sure enough I saw my watch being sold on Craigslist rite in front of me!! And its one of those things where I knew it was mine… Long story short.. I got the authorities involved, set up a sting with a couple undercovers, checked the serials (which matched) and I got it back!! 3 years later! Sorry for your loses, but don’t give up on the search. Especially if theres sentimental value and not just “stuff” that was stolen.

And then to bash Rolex?

It seems as long as I’m wearing it, it works fine. But on occasiona, when I take if off for 24-36 hours, it stops. After winding, it’ll work as long as I’m wearing it. But as soon as it’s off for 24-36, it quits again. Should I wind it more often, like each morning, even when it seems to be fine most of the time?

This gets the dried salt, dirt, dust and sweat off. And every so often, one can give the watch and the band a light scrub under the shower with a scrubbing brush and some soap, and then a big long rinse. They are quite a bit shinier when clean. I tend to do this when I have to unscrew the winder, just to get the muck off. Of course, it is assumed that the seals are in good condition and the watch is water-resistant.

And, all the time I thought I could trust Rolex for their superior knowledge of metallurgy. Turns out they are more concerned with salt water corrosion and re-saleability ( the new steel makes the watch stay “young looking” ).

Rolex, of all companies should NOT be making watches that cause allergic reactions, especially in an industry that is keenly aware of metal to skin contact. The wrist is a very thin skinned area of the body, and more porous as a result. 904L is poison, unless you are a SUBMARINE, as far as I’m concerned. Shame on Rolex.

In the watch industry, are black shinny dials more popular than black matt dials?

For several years, my 11 year old submariner was running fast (about a minute/day). I assumed that was just as good as ot gets. But I had it serviced for the first time (at the Rolex Service shop in San Francisco) two months ago. It is running great since then. I last set it October 1st and it has only lost 28 seconds in the past 22 days. I think that’s amazing for a mechanical device.

I’m sure they are an “engineering marvel” as I’ve heard them described several times, and they are definitely solid (I’ve owned 2 watches with this bracelet). But to me, they are uncomfortable. Regardless of the glidelock fit, mine never fit me perfectly, and they are so “solid” they don’t give at all. They are also heavy and drag their way down your wrist, once again, not giving at all. The older bracelets are light as air and give to the movement of your wrist. I now wear an older Sub with the older bracelet with fliplock clasp, and love it.

Stopping after a few seconds means something is either not adjusted correctly, or that potentially a tooth is broken on one of the gear train wheels (among many other possibilities). I would have your watch serviced by one who specializes in restoring vintage time pieces and who has a Rolex parts account.

I have a gmt II i think its from the early 80s. It is the design where you must go through the hours of the days to advance the date.

My watch has been serviced often since i received it about 12 years ago. The signs before failure have been the same each time. Initially the watch is accurate to within a few seconds a day. First sign: once in a while it will stop completely for a few minutes to an hour. Soon it stops until you give it a light knock. Next it runs intermittedly until i let it exhaust its reserves. After that it works fine for a brief time then it abruptly begins to run crazy fast. It will gain 15 minutes an hour.

Diagnosis appreciated.

to me a watch with scratches has character, just as people with wrinkles: it shows experience and maturity; it has seen the world.
a watch without scratches is like a baby, just about learning to walk… not just there yet.

Watches do change behavior over time. I would have the watchmaker who serviced the watch put it on a timing machine. Once on a timing machine, the watchmaker will have a better idea what is happening.

I recently had my DateJust fully services/overhauled by a Rolex authorized watchmaker (with parts account). It’s been a month and it runs about 3 – 4 seconds fast per day. I found if I stood it on its side with the crown down, it would lose at about the same rate and so I was able to keep it within a second a day (that was the only position, including crown-up, that seemed to lose time). All-of-a-sudden, it no longer loses time in the crown-down position, or any position. Any ideas on why it would stop losing time in a position that just worked for that?
Thank you!

I have a Rolex Perpetual Datejust. It has been stopping within 8 hours of leaving it idle. I had the movement machine of the watch serviced. But a week after it is still facing the same issue.

The watch has no such issue if its wound. Somehow I feel it shows this problem only after wearing it.
Could you help me with identifying what the issue could be?

Thanks.

I’ve read up a bit on all 3 movements.
Between the 3135 in the yachtmaster and the 3187 in the explorer 2, which do you think is better movement (reliability, accuracy, durability) amd why? I realIze the 3135 has been around 12 years longer than the 3187.

Thanks in advance

I have a Tudor Sub 7016/0 S/N 737806
As you noted, many of the earlier ones have the 7928 model dial with the Rose.
Mine also has a second hand with a smaller “lollipop” than others I’ve seen.
Does this variation coincide with the use of 7928 style hands, markers and crownguards in the earlier models? I have owned this watch since 1975 and know that it’s never been touched.
Any info would be appreciated.
BTW, I have photos if you’d like to see them.
Thanks.

That seems typical after the automatic movement stabilizes after a month or so. If you want accurate timing, get a quartz time movement watch, using battery power with
stable DC power voltage and not mechanical energy storeage! An inexpensive Timex quartz battery
digital watch is better than a fraction of second per day (see Wikipedia website on time movements) compared to the best
mechanical storage automatic movement watches. If you have an analog watch using a quartz with battery, it can also be much
more accurate than those expensive Rolex types. I have a Westminster analog quartz battery operated and it is better than
a second a day accuracy; and much better than the Oyster Pearl Rolex.

Set the watch and then go to this website and follow the instructions on how to wind your Rolex watch. It makes a difference if the watch has been left motionless long enough to stop so I would follow these instructions as a Rolex is too expensive to do something wrong to it……..http://www.wikihow.com/Wind-a-Rolex

Isn’t harder than 316L but it resist better sea water corrosion. However, Monel and Hastelloy alloys are more sea water corrosion resistant, but aren’t steels, but nickel based alloys.

I usually buy my watches new from the dealer. I was skeptical at first but ebay reviews were spot on. the advertised watch condition is spot on. being a 55 year old watch, the only issues i noticed were small black specs on the dial, but its expected from an old watch with lettering ink drying and flaking small bits. This can be easily cleaned up at my local service center. Matt was very helpful with answering my questions and I didnt feel rushed off the phone, a feeling i recently had at a local vintage watch store. The 904l is indeed more corrosion resistant (under extreme chemical conditions), but 316l is harder, contrary to what you stated. Furthermore, 904l induces more allergic reactions than 316. Please do your homework next time.

My problem is that, unfortunately, the Rolex crest that featured on the buckle of the strap has become unglued and I can’t find it to effect a repair.
Is it possible to salvage this predicament and, if so, how do I proceed?
As you can imagine, with the memories it carries this is a watch that carries many precious memories that greatly exceed the monetary value of the watch itself.

I look forward to hearing from you in the hope that you will be the bearer of good news.

However, Tudor is far more affordable for the general public, who by and large wouldn’t really know or care much about whether the watches use ETA or in-house movements. Tudor watches are wonderful things to own. I have 2 vintage models- one a circa 1955 Oyster Royal [manual wind-up] and the other a circa 1963 Oyster Prince- both keep time beautifully and accurately today. Both look superb on the wrist. If that is not long-lasting value for money, I don’t know what is.

The Oysterquartz is a true collector’s timepiece. Depending on what needed to be done to the movement, it can be very costly to fix. This is one of the drawbacks to the Oysterquartz model.

Did she buy it brand new or did she buy it preowned? How long did it work for before it stopped working?

It was given to me by my wife for a birthday so I can’t ask her what it cost new but I believe it was one of the first produced.
All went well-battery changed from time to time-but one day it stopped. For some time I did nothing about it, but when I did send it in, it turned out that the problem was not the battery but the mechanism and Rolex have quoted a price of £1430 to put right.

I suspect this is much more than the watch cost my wife new but can I please trouble you to advise me on my best course of action? Rolex seems totally unconcerned.

Comment on What’s Better, Acrylic or Sapphire Rolex Crystals? by James Kimbrough Park https://beckertime.com/blog/whats-better-acrylic-sapphire-rolex-crystals/#comment-58 Sun, 28 Oct 2012 18:55:46 +0000 http://beckertime.com/?p=596#comment-58 Took my Rolex in for servicing with shattered crystal. Rolex had been received in June 1985 as graduation gift from my parents. Assumed crystal had been synthetic sapphire because of date received watch. Watch taken in for servicing and crystal replacement, wore for two weeks after servicing, then new crystal fell of and was clearly acrylic. Startling to me because I had thought original crystal synthetic sapphire. When watch with fallen-off crystal taken back to repair place , store owner told me serial number on my watch corresponded to manufacturing in 1981 and therefore he had correctly done the crystal replacement as acrylic. But from my reading of your article, acrylic scratches easily, yet my crystal replaced only twice in 27 years (first replacement done by parents) and I had not noticed much scratching at all, only the breaking of the crystal that had occurred twice, necessitating the replacements. Never had to think much about servicing the watch: always a great watch and worn every day for the past 27 years. Shop owner of course now says the broken crystal I took in was acrylic. How can I know for sure which type of crystal my watch had? How infallible is the serial number as a reference? How could the watch have been worn so frequently over so many years with an acrylic crystal and very little scratching occurring? Your article mentions that “Rolex slowly introduced synthetic sapphire with no clear indication when the entire line would be either sapphire crystals or acrylic.” Could this shop owner be wrong that the watch given to me in 1985 (and he says made in 1981) was meant to have an acrylic crystal? What are my options? Thank you for your very informative posting and thank you in advance for any light you can shed on any of the above.

It sounds like it is an escapement issue.

I bought a Rolex perpetual oyster second hand from jewellers, it came with all paper work and two year warranty. I’ve had it now for over 2 months and wear it 24/7 only take of to shower as had after market diamond bezel. I’ve noticed its lost time. it has gained 4 min. I’m not sure why!!! do you think I should get them to check it as still under warranty or is it just one them things with Rolex watch’s.

No watch is waterproof. A watch can only be water resistant to varying degrees.

I have just bought a ladies rolex 1976 and it has had to be returned to the shop because it required a service. When I asked them to waterproof the watch also, they told me that it has a plexiglass face and that it cannot be waterproofed. Could you tell me if this is true?
Thank you if you can.

If the watch stops after service (and the watch is worn regularly), send it back to Rolex and have them to a Warranty Inspection and repair.

I never needed to wind the watch in all the years prior to the service but the assistant in the shop did so before returning my watch to me.

Accompanying the watch are five booklets in a cardboard cover, all first published 1946 by the Rolex Watch Co, apparently with a limited print number of 1000 and entitled Rolex Jubilee Vade Mecum.
1) Step by Step H Wilsdorf no.904
2) The Evolution of the wrist watch chronometer no.904
3) How the water proof watch came into being no.904
4) The story of the self winding watch no.904
5) The story of Rolex 1905-1948 with inserts which I assume related to the watch gifted

Could you please tell me if these booklets have any value and if there is a market for them. Advices would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Watch Time Magazine, has actually proven on it’s visits to Rolex S.A., that the depth ratings are actually 25% more waterproof than the advertised rating! For example, the Deepsea model advertised at 3900m is actually tested to 4200m! I have all their Rolex featured mags and can on request confirm this. Thank you.

When was the last time your apples has been serviced? Generally, a Rolex should be serviced every 3 to 7 years. Usually when you start to notice inconsistencies with the time keeping, it can be a sign that it is ready to be serviced.

Thanks,
Matt

Thank you for your interest in our Rolex watches.

Most of our Rolex watches on eBay and our website do NOT have aftermarket bands. It is only most of the least expensive items. Price is always based on age, condition and what is original vs what is aftermarket. The Rolex watches that cost the least will have aftermarket bands. Also the fact that we fully disclose all information in a way that leaves nothing to the buyer’s imagination…meaning no trickery with words…very transparent wording shows that we are a company of integrity…the bad guys will not disclose this important information to the buyer.

Let us know if we can assist with anything.

Thanks,
Matt

First, great article in general! We appreciate you taking the time to go in-depth with the material choices we have made. Obviously, it was a tough decission to use Thermoplastic Elastomer, since it is “hard to explain” to the common customer. We felt Rolex owners would do the research and realize that it was a better material, than Silicone, Rubber or really anything out there.

As you know kickstarter.com has been an incredible tool to get our idea to the masses! So far we are almost half way to our goal. It is because of people like yourself and your customers, that we created the product. Thanks again! By and large, Rolexes made from the mid-2000s going forward have solid links and solid end links. The no-Date Submariner was one of the last Rolex sport watches to have solid bracelet and end links.

You mention here under Quality that a Rolex has to have solid bracelet links to be authentic. That is not true. Rolex did not always make solid bracelet links. They originally were hollow whether stainless or gold. Do all your pre owned Rolex watches have solid bracelet links?
