SIHH 2015 – A Preview Part 3

It is now time that SIHH has just been and gone. A shame, though I am able to bring you some of the lovely pieces that were on show as well as which were previewed. Let me finish the final part of the now ‘so-called’ preview , then it will be onto my favourite pieces from the show itself.

Panerai

Next up we have Panerai, whom every year makes a real effort in their releases. I believe this year would be no different.

The one piece that caught my eye from Panerai was the PAM 616 Submersible 1950 Carbotech. As suggested by the word Carbotech at the end of another incredibly long name, this piece uses a carbon composite material. Like most carbon or carbon fibre cases it has a nice pattern to it, though different from the usual carbon weave that we have become accustomed to. It gives me the impression of lines and grain found in some types of wood. Making it feel almost organic. There are nods towards the heritage of the brand, especially in the design of this piece and also the classic 47mm size. A real must for Paneristis.

What we like here are the blue on black accents and the use of an aged lume. Rather than the bright super luminova we see these days. A lovely piece and I think may be a favourite for some Panerai fans, due to the mix of new age materials and lots of nods towards the Panerai DNA.

Piaget

An absolute favourite of mine this year, the Altiplano Chronograph with the ultra-thin 883 calibre. The epitome of understated elegance and class. Super thin, super elegant and plain gorgeous. The standout feature with this watch is absolutely how thin it is, the calibre itself is only 4.65mm thick the case is just over 8mm thick too. Interestly though Piaget have gone without the use of actual sub dials, like for example on a Rolex Daytona, but a more subtle layout that is indicated just by the markings on the dial itself.

The dial display the hours, minutes, small seconds at 6 o’clock, along with a 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock, flyback chrongraph seconds and a 24-hour (dual-time indication) at 9 o’clock. It is interesting to see that dual-time sub-dial at nine, instead of another chrono counter.

Manually wound with 50 hour power reserve. Pure simplicity makes this a stand out watch. I absolutely love it. As it stands the calibre 883 is the world’s thinnest hand-wound flyback chronograph. Winner!
